As Contreau, Julian Determan blends and prunes found sounds into melodic compositions that physically occupy spaces, or at least make them known. His approach is comparable to that of a landscaper, only working with what he’s been given. In Julian’s case, it happens to be sounds and audio inspirations scattered across the virtual world. From these ‘found sounds’ he creates an auditory vista through which sounds assume different personas.
With the Urban Street Crossing/Halifax single, Contreau presents his swanky sound design capabilities. This single comprises of two original tracks, Halifax and Urban Street Crossing, produced by Contreau. From these two tracks, he sought three remixes from the likes of Oby Nine(NL) Know V.A(NL) and K15(UK).
Urban Street Crossing/Halifax is lush in its melodic makeup with intricately interwoven tonal patterns. Its progressions and change ups are so subtle the listen fails pick up on, but somehow cannot escape its presence. The meticulous arrangement of ambient sounds juxtaposition against 2-step beats hints of a stylistic dichotomy constantly portrayed on the EP. This disparity tells of a producer opening up himself utterly to the creative process as opposed to stubbornly influencing the process.
In its entirety Urban Street Crossing/Halifax is constructed as a montage of different styles. Resulting from this creation is the manner by which it soothes the ears of the urban listener into a near tranquilized state. A state where crossing the street becomes as pleasurable experience rather than a rowdy affair.
Urban Street Crossing/Halifax Single is INI Movement’s 16th release out on Bandcamp as of 10th February 2014.
